Non-axisymmetric instabilities in shocked adiabatic accretion flows
We investigate the linear stability of a shocked accretion flow onto a black hole in the adiabatic limit. Our linear analyses and numerical calculations show that, despite the post-shock deceleration, the shock is generally unstable to non-axisymmetric perturbations. The simulation results of Molteni, Tóth & Kuznetsov can be well explained by our linear eigenmodes. The mechanism of this instabi...
متن کاملNon-axisymmetric instabilities in shocked accretion flows with differential rotation
The linear stability of a shocked isothermal accretion flow onto a black hole is investigated in the inviscid limit. The outer shock solution, which was previously found to be stable with respect to axisymmetric perturbations, is, however, generally unstable to non-axisymmetric ones. Eigenmodes and growth rates are obtained by numerical integration of the linearized equations. The mechanism of ...
متن کاملNon-axisymmetric Flows on Hot Jupiters with Oblique Magnetic Fields
Giant planets that reside in close proximity to their host stars are subject to extreme irradiation, which gives rise to thermal ionization of trace Alkali metals in their atmospheres. On objects where the atmospheric electrical conductivity is substantial, the global circulation couples to the background magnetic field, inducing supplementary fields and altering the nature of the flow. To date...
متن کاملA numerical method for simulating the dynamics of 3D axisymmetric vesicles suspended in viscous flows
We extend “A fast algorithm for hydrodynamic interactions of inextensible vesicles in 2D”, Veerapaneni et al. Journal of Computational Physics, 228(7), 2009 to the case of three dimensional axisymmetric vesicles of spherical or toroidal topology immersed in viscous flows. Although the main components of the algorithm are similar in spirit to the 2D case—spectral approximation in space, semi-imp...
